Development/Construction

Gerda Geldenhuys has been promoted to senior associate at Musson Cattell Mackey Partnership Architects Designers Planners. Since joining the firm in 2012, Geldenhuys has expanded on several years of international experience, extensive technical knowledge and creative problem-solving abilities. With experience in all stages of a project, she has taken the lead on commercial, mixed-use and residential projects.

Education

Lawrence Paul Yuxweluptun Lets’lo:tseltun, artist of Coast Salish and Okanagan descent and Emily Carr University (ECU) alum, and Terry Irwin, head, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon University, will be awarded honorary doctorates at ECU’s May 9 convocation. In addition, Vancouver Island artist/activist and ECU alum Marianne Nicolson will receive ECU’s Emily Award, which honours outstanding achievements by university alumni.

Finance

Kulwant Sidhu has been appointed tax partner at Walsh King LLP, moving into the new leadership role in the tax group from her position as senior tax manager. Sidhu has extensive experience in serving clients and providing expertise in a wide range of industries; she has worked for Walsh King for more than 10 years. Founded in 1981, Walsh King was established for the specific purpose of serving the needs of privately owned entities and ultra-high-net-worth families.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Jesse Crockett has been appointed general manager of the Josie Hotel in Rossland, North America’s newest slopeside boutique hotel. Crockett has more than 20 years of hospitality experience, including working at the Fairmont Waterfront and Fairmont Pacific Rim hotels in Vancouver, as well as Predator Ridge Resort in the Okanagan. Crockett joined the team at SilverStar Mountain Resort in 2011 as accommodations/property manager and was appointed hospitality director in 2014, a role he held until his departure in March 2019. He also spent the past five years as a volunteer firefighter for the Coldstream Fire Hall.

Bard on the Beach recently named its 2019 board of directors: John McCulloch is board president; Jim Bovard, sports physician, is past president; Darlene Howard, retired HR specialist, is vice-president; Beth Macdonald, retired lawyer, is secretary; and Kostya Polyakov, partner, KPMG, is treasurer. Ingrid Otto has joined Harris & Co. LLP as associate counsel. Otto has more than two decades of experience advocating on behalf of clients and providing strategic advice on all aspects of workplace law. Prior to joining Harris, she was general counsel and executive director, legal services and strategic labour relations, at the Health Employers’ Association of BC.

Resources

John McCoach resigned as CEO of Nautlius Minerals Inc., along with four of five directors. Tariq Al Barwani remains a director of Nautilus and has appointed the company’s CFO, Glenn Withers, as managing director of Nautilus. The company was delisted from the Toronto Stock Exchange on April 3, 2019.

Ricus Grimbeek has been appointed president and chief executive officer at Trevali Mining Corp., succeeding Mark Cruise. Grimbeek is a mining engineer with nearly three decades of progressive experience in the resource sector, working at all levels of the business. Before joining Trevali, Grimbeek was chief operating officer of Vale Base Metals North Atlantic and, prior to that, was president and COO of South32 Australia.

Supplies

Richard Ayuen has been appointed vice-president and general manager of Coquitlam-based SureWerx Canada, a global supplier of professional tool, equipment and safety products. Ayuen has more than 20 years of senior leadership experience, primarily in the industrial sector, and has held roles such as vice-president, waterworks division, Wolseley Canada; vice-president, Wajax Industrial Components; and vice-president, RNG Equipment. Most recently, Ayuen was vice-president, sales and marketing, North America, at Lauzon Distinctive Hardwood Flooring.

Name change

Urban Select Capital Corp. has changed its name to Roadman Investments Corp. and its new trading symbol is LITT on the TSX Venture Exchange. Urban Select Capital Corp. is an investment issuer focused on investing growth capital in private and public companies in a broad range of sectors including natural resources, media and entertainment, education, health care and consumer retail services.

HATS OFF

CapriCMW Insurance donated $15,000 to Variety – the Children’s Charity. These funds will support the charity’s work in helping B.C.’s children with special needs and their families cover costs for medical care and services, mobility and communication equipment, therapies and developmental programs. This donation is the culmination of a month-long challenge issued to each of CapriCMW’s 13 offices in B.C. to fundraise as much as possible for Variety.

The Vancouver office of Wawanesa Insurance has given another donation to support Children of the Street Society’s efforts to stop the sexual exploitation of B.C.’s young people. Since 2017, Wawanesa’s Vancouver office has given $2,500 to the society.

SOS Children’s Village BC recently received the following donations: Bartl Alter Ego Trust, $119,000; Rogers Communications, $15,000 to the Learning Club program; Ecclesiastical Insurance, $15,000 to the Sounds of Learning program; Boag Foundation, $10,000; Fraser Valley Real Estate Board, $5,000; employees from Wellons Canada donated $4,100; and BlueShore Financial and Windsor Plywood Foundation, held at the Vancouver Foundation, each donated $2,500. BlueShore’s donation was specifically for the Camp, Recreation and Cultural Exploration
