Japanese gaming studio Namco Bandai Studios has announced plans to open a facility in Vancouver’s Centre for Digital Media (CDM).

Richard Smith, CDM director and master of digital media, said the studio will be Namco Bandai’s first operation in North America.

“This is a gaming company that’s looking to relocate to get a foothold in the North American market and to better understand what’s going on here,” said Smith in an interview with Business in Vancouver.

Namco Bandai will locate its Vancouver operation at CDM, which combines classrooms with office space for gaming companies. The centre is jointly operated by UBC, SFU, Emily Carr University of Art + Design and BCIT, and is located at Emily Carr’s Great Northern Way campus.

The Japanese company will join gaming companies Ayogo and Blackbird Interactive at the centre.

Smith said the facility’s proximity to research, university students and the ability to make connections in a new country were all factors in Namco Bandai’s decision to choose Vancouver.

The B.C. government was also active in pitching Vancouver to the company.
