The average worker in British Columbia took home almost 4% less than the average Canadian employee and more than 20% less than their Albertan counterparts in November, according to Statistics Canada data released January 30.
Workers in B.C. – including both salaried and hourly employees – made an average of $892 per week in November, compared with the Canadian average of $928. Employees in Alberta earned $1,131 per week The province with the highest average weekly earnings was Alberta, at $1,131.40.
When hourly workers alone are taken into account, British Columbians made $23.36 per hour – slightly more than the Canadian average of $23.16. Albertans made $27.32 per hour – almost $4 more than in B.C.
The sectors in B.C. with the highest weekly earnings were:
- mining, quarrying and oil and gas extraction ($1,848);
- utilities ($1,686); and
- professional, scientific and technical services ($1,259).
