Industry Minister James Moore is not seeking re-election in the federal race expected this fall.
The MP for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam issued a statement on his website, saying he wanted to return home to B.C. and spend time with his young family.
“While I have every confidence that Prime Minister Harper and our Conservative Government will be re-elected, and I wish I could be part of the next Conservative Government, after 5 terms and 15 years in public life, and with health challenges in my family, I have concluded it is impossible for me to seek another term in office,” Moore said on his website.
The federal minister was due to run against NDP candidate Sara Norman, the Liberal's Ron McKinnon and Brad Nickason of the Green Party of Canada in the fall election.
He joins a growing list of cabinet ministers to announce their resignation this year, including Justice Minister Peter MacKay and Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird.
Moore was elected as the local MP at the age of 24, replacing Liberal MP Lou Sekora.
Since becoming industry minister in 2013, Moore guided efforts to introduce more players into Canada’s wireless phone market and boost B.C.’s tech sector.
