A man is dead following a shooting at a Site C open house event in Dawson Creek July 16.

The Indendepent Investigations Office confirmed the death to the Alaska Highway News.

Dawson Creek RCMP have cordoned off a section outside the the Fixx Urban Grill restaurant at the Stonebridge Hotel on Highway 2 near the outskirts of the city.

The restaurant was host to a BC Hydro open house July 16 on the construction of Hydro's controversial $8.8-billion Site C dam project for the Peace River.

Details about the shooting remain scarce at this time.

Curtis Pratt was attending the open house and said he saw a man flipping tables in the restaurant around 6:30 p.m. Pratt says the man was escorted outside. Pratt said he later saw a body outside the restaurant.

Police have not confirmed Pratt's account of events. The IIO says a team is en route to the city, while RCMP contain the scene. The IIO is called in to investigate all fatal police involved shootings.

Shortly before 9 p.m., at least four police cruisers and an ambulance remained on scene. Blood could be seen on the pavement outside the restaurant. Kitchen staff were outside at the back of the restaurant.

This story will be updated as more information becomes available.
