Johnny’s Pops, a bicycle cart selling handmade “artisan” popsicles in such flavours as blueberry mojito, strawberry balsamic basil and avocado lime, is the number one place to eat in Vancouver, according to a Yelp listing of top eateries in the city released October 1.
Yelp created the list by ranking local, non-chain businesses in Vancouver based on reviews and star ratings. More weight was given to recent reviews.
Although the business is not a traditional, brick-and-mortar restaurant, the fact that it came in first place is representative of a new trend in the city toward unconventional tastes, said Yelp Vancouver community manager Ayla Collins.
“There are so many new restaurants opening up in Vancouver all the time, and it’s really exciting to see,” Collins said.
“Craft beer is booming, food trucks have exploded over the past couple of years, doughnuts and gourmet hot dogs have also gotten really big.
“It’s great to see quirky, hole-in-the wall places coming to the forefront.”
Most of the establishments that made the list were more traditional, however. In second place was Le Crocodile, a French restaurant that has existed in the city for three decades. Italian restaurant Tavola came in third spot.
