Japan and the United Kingdom will compete against Canada in this year’s annual Honda Celebration of Light, the organizers announced March 7.
This is the 27th year of the festival, which takes place at English Bay and attracted more than a million spectators last year.
“Every year, one of [Vancouver’s] most spectacular highlights—literally—is the Honda Celebration of Light,” B.C. Premier Christy Clark said. “It’s a great show, a major draw for tourists and an important economic driver.”
Last year, the festival’s budget was $2 million , which mostly came from sponsorship and in-kind donations. Most of this went toward the cost of fireworks and transportation and accommodation for the competing teams.
As always, the events will take place over three nights:
- July 29: Japan;
- August 2: U.K.; and
- August 5: Canada.
The winner will be announced August 8.
