Fluevog Shoes is returning to Victoria.

Vancouver shoe designer John Fluevog said it is planning to open a store in mid-to-late June at 566 Johnson St. in the city’s downtown area.

The store will be in the space previously occupied by American Apparel. It has 3,000 square feet on the main floor, said Stephen Bailey, marketing director for John Fluevog Shoes.

“We have been looking at Victoria for probably a decade now.”

Sometimes, the decision to open a store comes down to finding the perfect space, he said.

In this case, the company quickly decided on the space available on Lower Johnson Street, in a block known as a fashion district.

John Fluevog started his business in 1970 in Vancouver, as Fox and Fluevog. A Victoria store opened on Broad Street in 1972, closing after five years, Bailey said. “It was one of John’s all-time favourites and he is so excited to be back here.”

That store helped the company develop faithful customers in the capital region, Bailey said.

Today, Fluevog stores are in 10 Canadian cities, most recently opening in Edmonton on trendy Whyte Avenue. There are a dozen Fluevog stores in the U.S. and his colourful and unique styles are favoured by celebrities, including Madonna.
