Hun Sen has ruled Cambodia since 1985 and has never allowed election results, however inconvenient, to stand in the way of that continuing.

He was originally handed control of the government after the invasion by Vietnam in 1979. He navigated the transition to democracy in 1993, and when he lost an election in 1997, he launched a coup to get things back on track. Since then opposition parties have had to choose between maintaining a low profile or opting for non-existence.

In November the Supreme Court dissolved the main opposition Cambodia National Rescue Party. Hun Sen said last week senate elections in February and general elections in July will go ahead.
