The Communist Party of China has always had a vigorous attitude towards town planning and social engineering in general.

According to a story in Hong Kong’s South China Morning Post newspaper, the authorities in Beijing are in the process of evicting hundreds of thousands of migrant workers from the capital to meet the target population of 23 million in 2020.

Beijing’s population fell by 22,000 people last year to 21.7 million, the first time the capital’s population has shrunk in 17 years.

City officials have been pushing “low-end” factory workers and street market hawkers out of the city since 2014.
