The Canadian National Railway Company (CN) has ratified a new collective agreement with 1,800 locomotives engineers.

The five-year contract with the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference (TCRC) provides wage and benefit improvements each year, and modifies work rules. It will run through to December 31, 2022.

“This new contract demonstrates CN’s on-going commitment to working together with our employees and the TCRC to address workplace issues, in a respectful and mutually beneficial manner,” stated Mike Cory, CN executive vice-president and chief operating officer, in a news release.

“CN is very pleased to have renewed collective agreements with TCRC without any impact on the service we provide to customers and the North American economy.”

The deal comes as the Teamsters vote on whether to accept a collective agreement offer from Canadian Pacific (CP) – one which the union says falls short.

Members of the TCRC, along with those of the Canadian Signals and Communications System Council No. 11 of the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers, have until Friday, May 25 to vote on the offer from CP.

Voting results are expected to be announced the same day.
