Pandaland, an exhibit featuring 500 plush baby panda bears and a family of nine, giant origami paper pandas, has arrived at Aberdeen Centre.

Located in the mall’s central atrium, the summer-long display is completed with bamboo groves and lily ponds to mimic the panda bears’ natural habitat.

“The panda is such an iconic animal and it’s very well received,” said Joey Kwan, director of promotion and public relations.

“It bridges the East and the West, that’s why I’ve decided to choose it as the theme of the display.”

Kwan has been planning and organizing Aberdeen’s exhibits since 2007.

“I wanted to put on something fun for the kids, but also include educational factors,” added Kwan.

Hidden among the bamboo trees is a little red panda.

Visitors are encouraged to spot him and upload a picture to Instagram with #AberdeenCentrePandaLand for a chance to win a mini panda figurine.

Alongside the display are signs with interesting panda facts such as: pandas can poop up to 40 times a day, and up to 60 pounds of droppings.

From July 3 to 14, Hong Kong artist Mitchell (Kit Mei) Hung will be present on-site to create live sketches of the pandas; her paintings will be displayed in the corridors of the mall.

Pandaland took more than a month of planning and construction; the baby panda bears were ordered from the United States and the origami sculptures were created entirely by hand and range from three to 10 feet tall.

According to Kwan, after the exhibit ends, all the plush baby pandas will be donated to the Richmond Christmas Fund for children from low-income families.

There are also 12 collectible panda bear figurines for shoppers who spend $15 or more at any Aberdeen Centre merchant, restaurant or food court locations.

Come see the adorable panda bear family at Aberdeen Centre from now until Sept. 3.

This exhibit is not to be confused with papier-mâché pandas on display at Metropolis at Metrotown.
