Michael Meneer and Jason Hwang have been appointed president and CEO, and vice-president, salmon, respectively, at the Pacific Salmon Foundation, effective April 1. Meneer joined the foundation in 2009 as vice-president for development, marketing and communications; he is currently executive vice-president and succeeds Brian Riddell, who is retiring after 10 years as president and CEO. Riddell will continue to work for the foundation as science adviser. Hwang brings 25 years of experience in Pacific salmon conservation and habitat protection with Fisheries and Oceans Canada to the newly created foundation role.

Alex Klenman has joined the board of directors at Black Tusk Resources Inc. Klenman has more than 30 years of business development, finance, marketing, media and corporate communications experience in both the private and public sectors. He is co-founder of Nexus Gold Corp. and served as its chair for three years before being named president and CEO in May 2018. Currently he is also president and CEO of Azincourt Energy and is a member of the boards of Urban Select Capital and Ross River Minerals. Prior to 2012, Klenman was a communications consultant for several TSX Venture Exchange-listed resource companies, including Roxgold Inc., Integra Gold, Forum Uranium and Midnight Sun Mining. Klenman also spent 10 years in broadcasting, which included board positions with CKVU Television in Vancouver and Canwest Pacific Television.

Guillaume Courtois has been appointed to manage Columbus Gold Corp.’s exploration activities in French Guiana. Courtois joined Columbus at the Montagne d’Or gold project in 2014 and then was retained by the Montagne d’Or Joint Venture under the management of Nordgold, where he oversaw drilling programs and technical field studies for the feasibility study and permitting requirements.

Jaclyn Cummings has been appointed local marketing manager at Lyft – the company’s first Vancouver-based hire. Cummings has more than 10 years of marketing and communications experience and was most recently the marketing director for Saje Natural Wellness.

Technology

Joanne Yan has been appointed to the board of directors of Electra Meccanica Vehicles Corp., a designer and manufacturer of electric vehicles. Yan replaces Robert Tarzwell, who has resigned; he joined the board in 2015. Yan has 25 years of experience in advising and managing both publicly traded and private companies. She is president of Joyco Consulting Services, which she founded in 1994 to provide consulting services in the areas of corporate structuring, business development and strategic planning initiatives. Yan has served on the board of directors of several public and private companies, including the Zongshen Industrial Group, Electra Meccanica’s strategic manufacturing partner. Recently, she led a transaction that enabled a Chinese company to acquire a 49% interest in Harbour Air, the largest seaplane operator in North America.

HATS OFF

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Arlene Keis, CEO, go2HR, was recognized with a Lifetime Achievement Award by the Tourism Industry Association of BC. The award recognizes an individual for his or her long-serving tenure in B.C.’s tourism industry and contributions to the industry’s success. Under Keis’ 17 years of leadership, go2HR has tripled in size, expanded programs to include contracts with the Industry Training Authority, WorkSafeBC and government, and established strategic partnerships with other tourism organizations.

Vancity credit union has become the first financial institution in Canada to receive the Accessibility Certified Gold rating under the Rick Hansen Foundation Accessibility Certification program. Both the Burnaby Heights community branch and the Vancity Centre office in Vancouver have been certified. Accessibility features include:

  • fully accessible automated teller machines that include grab bars, knee clearance for chair users, accessible buttons and plugs for headphones;
  • power doors in all entrances;
  • contrasting colour flooring and walls for improved wayfinding;
  • a lowered teller counter with a hearing induction loop for employees and members; and
  • accessible washrooms with inclusive signage.

PARC Retirement Living donated $1.2 million to the Peace Arch Hospital Foundation in support of five new surgical suites. The registration and triage area in the hospital’s new emergency department will be named in PARC Retirement Living’s honour.

Naturally Urban Pet Food Delivery donated $570 to Kids Up Front Foundation. The pet food company donates 5% of each sale to a local charity of the purchaser’s choice.

The BC Hospitality Foundation awarded 10 sommelier scholarships of $1,000 each to individuals working in B.C.’s hospitality industry who are furthering their wine knowledge through a course of study at an eligible institution. This year’s recipients are Ann Brydle, Cascadia Liquor; Suzanne Cody, Vij’s Rangoli; Jennifer Ellan, Fiore Famiglia; Shawn Jones, Nomad Restaurant; Erin Korpisto, Okanagan College; Matthew Landry, Stable House Bistro; Michael Littleford, Nightingale/Cin Cin; Melissa Lu, Blue Water Cafe & RawBar; Meghan McDowell, Bistro Wagon Rouge; and Aron Veen, Tap Restaurant. The scholarships were sponsored by Sunrock Vineyards, Authentic Wine & Spirit Merchants, Da Silva Vineyards & Winery, Hester Creek and Okanagan Crush Pad.

The 22nd annual Panorama Heights Elementary School’s Hoops for Hope basketball play day raised a total of $1,440.75 for Crossroads Hospice Society.

Scotiabank has sponsored the Vancouver Female Hockey association with a $5,000 donation. •
