Education

Alisa Webb has been appointed vice-president, students, at the University of the Fraser Valley. Webb has held this role on an interim basis since June 2018; she is responsible for the office of the registrar, student life and development, counselling services, the Centre for Accessibility Services and athletics and campus recreation at the university. Webb was associate dean of students in the College of Arts and was a faculty member in the history department after joining the university in 2004.

Finance

Han Shu has joined GroupHEALTH Benefit Solutions as director of finance. Shu, based in the company’s head office in Surrey, leads the finance team and oversees the accounting, financial reporting, tax and treasury functions for the company. Shu has more than 10 years of diverse experience in the assurance and advisory industry; she was most recently with Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu Ltd.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Jana Yackel has been appointed director of sales and marketing at Rosewood Hotel Georgia. Yackel has more than 25 years of sales and marketing experience in the hospitality industry and most recently served as regional director of sales and marketing at Executive Hotels & Resorts in the luxury division, where she oversaw the opening of several new hotels, including the Exchange Hotel Vancouver and the Seaside Hotel, and managed the revenue stream for these properties as well as Hotel Le Soleil. In previous years, Yackel held several leadership roles in the hotel sales and marketing space, serving as director of sales and marketing for the Hilton Whistler Resort & Spa, the Delta Hotel and Conference Centre and Hilton Vancouver Airport.

Legal

Michael Dew has become Jenkins Marzban Logan LLP’s newest partner. The boutique law firm specializes in the areas of construction, commercial and matrimonial dispute resolution. Dew has a varied civil litigation practice but focuses on construction law, creditors remedies (including builders liens in bankruptcy), shareholder and partnership disputes and insurance matters.

Kelly Starrak has joined Miller Thomson LLP’s Vancouver office as an associate in the firm’s real estate group. Starrak’s practice focuses on planning, development and Aboriginal law matters.

Non-profit

Amy Robichaud has been appointed executive director at Dress for Success Vancouver. Robichaud is the former director of partnership and engagement for Minerva BC, co-founder of FundHer.ca and a speaker on mental health, intergenerational leadership, implicit bias, women in politics, leadership and civic engagement.

Resources

Jessica McDonald has been appointed chair of Trevali Mining Corp.’s board of directors. McDonald has been an independent director of Trevali since 2017. McDonald served as interim CEO of Canada Post from March 2018 to March 2019 and has also served as CEO of BC Hydro. McDonald has been chair of the board of the Canada Post Group of Cos. and is also a director of Coeur Mining, Hydro One and the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade.

Transportation

Lee Lipton, associate consultant, Airport Strategy and Marketing (ASM), has been appointed senior vice-president, aviation strategy, at the global consulting firm dedicated to supporting airports, airlines, tourism authorities and governments with the development of new air routes. Lipton is based in Vancouver and will continue to support ASM’s worldwide client base and global network providing air service development, strategy, planning, marketing and other commercial services to the world’s airports and air transportation stakeholders.

HATS OFF

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

RBC Foundation donated $50,000 in support of YWCA’s Career Zone, which assists multi-barriered youths with a range of services to gain work experience and sustainable employment. The donation is part of RBC’s Future Launch, a 10-year commitment to unlock the potential of young people in Canada by addressing three critical gaps: experience, skills and networking.

The BC Hospitality Foundation (BCHF) was the chosen charity for Tourism Vancouver’s 2019 Dine Out Vancouver Festival’s grand tasting and also received partial proceeds from the Street Food City program. In addition, the BCHF ran an online lottery in conjunction with the festival. The total amount raised by these efforts was over $18,000. The money will help support hospitality industry workers facing financial crisis due to extraordinary medical circumstances and fund the BCHF’s scholarship program for students enrolled in hospitality-related programs.

Wesgroup Equipment donated $50,000 to provide bursaries and scholarships for British Columbia Institute of Technology (BCIT)students in the heavy mechanical trades and professional sales marketing program. This led to a matching donation from the BCIT Women in Trades and Technology Fund to allocate an additional $2,000 bursary to a female student, with preference in the heavy mechanical trades foundation program.

The Conconi Family Foundation donated $1.2 million to BC Cancer Foundation, in direct support of the BC Cancer breast cancer team’s two-year study looking at the benefits of introducing circulating tumour DNA testing in the clinic. The team conducting the study believes it will have critical implications for how to treat not only breast cancers but other cancers as well. The Conconi Family Foundation is a long-time supporter of the BC Cancer Foundation, having given nearly $5 million since 2011 and establishing the Conconi Family Immunotherapy Lab at BC Cancer in Victoria, where immune-based cancer treatments are in development. •
