Vancouver-born actor Seth Rogen is launching a new brand of recreational cannabis, dubbed Houseplant, in collaboration with screenwriter friend Evan Goldberg and the world’s largest publicly traded cannabis company, Canopy Growth Corp. (TSX:WEED, NYSE:CGC).

The Canadian company appears to be based in Vancouver, given that its news release has Vancouver in the dateline. Its products are set to be available in B.C.'s online cannabis store as well as legal cannabis stores in early April. Plans are for it to be available in other provincial cannabis distributors as well. Those products will start with a sativa strain and will eventually include an indica strain as well as capsules and pre-rolled joints.

“Houseplant is a passion we’ve brought to life through drive and dedication,” said Seth Rogen in a news release. “Every decision we’ve made for the business reflects the years of education, first-hand experience and respect we have for cannabis.”

Goldberg said that the duo had been preparing to launch the company for five years. C

It is not clear how Goldberg, or Rogen, who is known for appearing in stoner flicks such as Pineapple Express, will be active in the company other than owning shares, or whether they will attempt to circumvent Canada’s Cannabis Act, which forbids cannabis brands from associating with celebrities.

Rogen and Goldberg are not the first celebrities to have a stake in a cannabis brand, however.

Tommy Chong, known for being part of the Cheech and Chong comedy duo, has a medicinal cannabis brand called Chong’s Choice, which is available in some  U.S. states.

Kiss frontman Gene Simmons is the chief evangelist for the B.C.-based medical cannabis firm Invictus-MD partners.

Actors Kevin Smith and Jason Mewes, known for their characters Jay and Silent Bob, are part of a brand-licensing agreement with Canadian cannabis company Beleave Inc.

Perhaps best known of all is rapper Snoop Dogg, who has an arrangement with Canopy Growth to produce Leafs By Snoop – a brand that has caught the ire of the National Hockey League team the Toronto Maple Leafs, which have taken Snoop Dogg to trademark offices on both sides of the border alleging that consumers could confuse the two brands.
