Cannabis

Jerry Kieran has been appointed executive chairman at Segra International Corp., an agriculture technology company offering services that accelerate the advancement of the cannabis industry. Kieran has more than two decades of business development and horticulture experience; he is the former chief business development officer at Fluence Bioengineering, a global leader in horticultural lighting solutions.

Dani Walton, wholesale and distribution manager, Harborside, has been appointed to FinCanna Capital Corp.’s board of advisers. FinCanna is a royalty company for the U.S. licensed cannabis industry. Walton has been with Harborside, one of the largest cannabis dispensaries in the California, for more than 10 years, promoting the positive impacts of cannabis.

Education

Sandy Vanderburgh has been named the incoming provost and vice-president, academic, at Kwantlen Polytechnic University (KPU). He will start as incoming provost in May before taking up the full role on July 1. Vanderburgh was a sessional instructor at KPU early in his career before moving into leadership roles at post-secondary institutions in the Fraser Valley and Alberta, including serving as interim vice-president academic at Medicine Hat College and as a dean at Lethbridge College. Vanderburgh is also focused on student success and student engagement in research. Research has been a central part of his 26-year academic career, which includes more than 50 authored or co-authored articles, with coastal erosion along the Pacific Northwest in Oregon and Washington state being a focal point.

Legal

Sandy (Ningyan) Wang has joined Fasken’s Vancouver office as counsel in the corporate commercial group for the B.C. region.

Cory Sully has joined Lawson Lundell LLP’s Vancouver office as an associate in the firm’s labour and employment and privacy groups.

Daniel Kiselbach has joined Miller Thomson’s Vancouver office as a partner practising in the areas of international trade, customs and tax law. His work includes providing legal counsel before all levels of Canadian courts, as well as international courts and tribunals.

Non-profit

Vanessa Kwan has been appointed program director at Grunt Gallery, effective June 5. Kwan has worked at the gallery over the past five years as curator, with a strong emphasis on community engagement, strategic planning and international outreach. Kwan is an artist with an active practice and also has more than 15 years of arts administrative and curatorial experience. She has worked previously for organizations such as the Powell Street Festival (festival co-ordinator), Access Gallery (gallery director), the Vancouver Queer Film Festival (director of programming), the Vancouver Art Gallery (curator of performance) and Other Sights for Artists’ Projects (curator/producer).

Resources

Paul Ténière has been appointed president and CEO of Eastern Zinc Corp., succeeding Michael Dake, who has resigned. Ténière has 20 years of diverse experience in the mining and oil and gas sectors taking projects from exploration to mine development.

Teodora Dechev and Eric Strom have been appointed to Serengeti Resources Inc.’s board of directors. Dechev is president, CEO and director of Mundoro Capital Inc., a company that invests in, acquires and develops mineral resource properties in Serbia, Bulgaria and Mexico; she has more than 20 years of investment banking experience. Strom is a senior mining engineer with 23 years of international industry experience in precious and base metal mine development and operations in Canada, Australia and the U.S. Ian D. Brown has resigned as a director of Serengeti.

Name change

Nicola Wealth Management has shortened its name to Nicola Wealth and has completed the rebrand with a new logo and colour scheme. See its new look at nicolawealth.com.

Troymet Exploration Corp. has changed its name to Bessor Minerals Inc. and now trades on the TSX Venture Exchange under the symbol BST.

HATS OFF

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Gateway Casino & Entertainment, Starlight Casino and Match Eatery & Public House partnered their fundraising efforts and donated more than $18,000 to Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation, in support of the hospital’s new mental health and substance use wellness centre scheduled to open in April 2020. New Westminster’s Starlight Casino, through Gateway Casinos & Entertainment’s corporate giving program GatewayGIVES, has been supporting the new centre under a multi-year partnership with Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. Match Eatery & Public House joined the effort by conducting a series of 50/50 draws during weekends leading up to the last Super Bowl.

SOS Children’s Village BC recently received a $2,000 donation from the Arlin Foundation, while ElevatedPrompt Solutions and Elks Lodge White Rock #431 each donated $1,500. The following organizations each donated $1,000: B & D Autobody, Envision Financial Employees’ Endowment, KSM Stainless Steel Fabricators, Lions Club of North Surrey, Softlanding on behalf of its clients and donations received during its open house, Tenmore Property Services and Vancity Centralized Lending from its office fundraising.

Port Moody Oldtimers Hockey Association donated $4,594.95 to Crossroads Hospice Society. The funds were raised through the league’s sixth annual hockey pool and year-end banquet, and included donations of winnings from individual players. Since 2014, the Port Moody Oldtimers Hockey Association has helped raise more than $20,000 for the society.

Amar Doman, CEO, CanWel, made a personal donation of $25,000 to CKNW Kids’ Fund, in support of children with special needs.

Omicron, a development, design and construction firm with offices in Victoria and Vancouver, is Ronald McDonald House BC & Yukon’s first House Hero, contributing $10,000 in addition to collaborating on events and activities in the house for one month. •
