Consulting/Planning

Melanie Roskell and Quentin Talbot-Kelly have been appointed partners at Cornerstone Planning Group, joining founding partner David Whetter and Vancouver Island-based partner David Hill. Since joining the firm as senior planners, Roskell and Talbot-Kelly have directed major projects; both have strong backgrounds in engineering and a diversity of professional experience that will build on Cornerstone’s 45 years of service in the fields of strategic planning, functional facility and program design, public consultation and facilitation and Indigenous engagement.

Hospitality/Tourism/Convention

Alessandro Vianello has joined the team at Pourhouse as executive chef and introduced a new menu available from 5 p.m. to close, featuring classic dishes such as oysters Rockefeller, roasted bone marrow and chicken à la Maryland. Born and raised in Vancouver, Vianello has worked in Tuscany and Scotland and took turns in local kitchens such as the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver and the Fairmont Waterfront. Most recently he was the development chef at Gooseneck Hospitality, where he oversaw menu development and kitchen operations at the company’s four restaurants (Wildebeest, Bufala, Lucky Taco, Bells and Whistles) before joining the Kitchen Table Restaurant group that operates Pourhouse as well as Pizzeria Farina, Ask for Luigi, St. Lawrence and Di Beppe.

Legal

Kiran Sidhu has joined Lindsay Kenney LLP’s Vancouver office as an associate in the firm’s business and real estate group. Sidhu’s practice will focus on real estate and general corporate/commercial matters.

Caolan Lemke has joined MLT Aikins as an associate lawyer in the firm’s Vancouver office. Lemke has experience assisting clients from a wide range of industries with matters including mergers and acquisitions, corporate governance and reorganizations, and asset and share purchase and sale transactions. Lemke began his legal career at a law firm in Saskatoon in 2015 before moving to Vancouver in early 2018.

Stephen Wintermute has joined DLA Piper (Canada) LLP’s Vancouver office as an associate in the securities and capital markets group. Wintermute has a general corporate commercial law practice with experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate finance and commercial arrangements. Wintermute joins DLA Piper after working in the Calgary office of a national firm, where he maintained a corporate commercial law practice and assisted domestic and international clients with high-profile corporate transactions.

Non-profit

Karen Hamberg, vice-president, strategy, Westport Innovations, has been appointed chair of United Way of the Lower Mainland’s 2019 Campaign Cabinet. Hamberg has been involved in Westport’s annual United Way campaign for more than 15 years, helping with the development of both United Way’s campaign associate program and the GenNext initiative, engaging the next generation of local philanthropists. Angus English, vice-president, B.C. infrastructure, WSP Canada, will serve as vice-chair to the campaign.

Real estate

Adam Lord has been promoted to branch president at Associa British Columbia. Lord has more than 16 years of experience in the real estate industry and has been a member of the Associa team since 2015, working in a variety of capacities including vice-president of operations and senior vice-president of operations. As the new branch president, Lord will lead the B.C. market operations and be responsible for overall strata and property management growth and development of Associa’s Surrey, Vancouver and Kelowna branch offices. 

Transportation

Bill de Groot, manager, Park’N Fly at Vancouver International Airport, has relocated to Ontario as operations manager for Park’N Fly at Toronto Pearson International Airport.

HATS OFF

Business in Vancouver welcomes submissions from local small businesses and large corporations alike that demonstrate examples of corporate philanthropy and community involvement in the Vancouver area. High-resolution images are also welcome.

Vard Marine Inc. and Vard Electro Canada Inc. have donated $1.5 million towards the creation of a marine systems initiative at the University of British Columbia. The donation aims to ease the shortage of qualified engineers and naval designers by adding course content and pursuing research at the university that provides the requisite skills and knowledge.

Telus Vancouver Community Board donated a $10,000 grant to Canadian Cancer Society. The contribution is in support of the Leaders in Training program at Camp Goodtimes, a program for youths aged 16 to 18 who have been diagnosed with cancer, are siblings of those who have or are bereaved siblings. The program provides an opportunity for youth to grow leadership and communication skills while developing confidence, peer relationships and the ability to work within a team setting. 

Throughout this past December, the staff at Vancouver-based Hyperwallet, a PayPal service, raised and donated $15,189.70 to Dan’s Legacy. The funds will go towards the charity’s counselling and life-skills intervention programs for at-risk youth. Hyperwallet regularly conducts fundraisers for charitable organizations.

100 Women Who Care Vancouver members donated $11,400 to Saint James Music Academy, which provides classical music education to at-risk children and youths. The funds will support the academy’s nutrition program, which provides healthy, fresh meals for each student before the after-school music programs begin. The shared meal also provides a place to build community and social cohesion.

Hi-Cube Storage Products has sponsored the Canadian Materials Handling & Distribution Society’s annual charity golf tournament for the past five years (2013 to 2018). The tournament has helped to raise more than $45,000 for Canuck Place Children’s Hospice. •
