British Columbia’s digital and media agencies have grown an average of 5% over the past year, according to data collected for Business in Vancouver’s Biggest Digital and Media Agencies in B.C. list.

The median employee growth for the agencies on the list was 0%, suggesting that smaller companies lower on the list experienced lower employee growth than their larger counterparts.

The average number of employees working at the province’s top digital and media agencies grew 6.5% to 78.7 employees in 2020 from 73.9 employees in 2019.

No. 1-ranked BroadbandTV Corp. recorded the largest one-year growth on the list, increasing its employee base 33.3% to 400 in 2020 from 300 in 2019. That increase was slightly less than the 44% employee growth it posted the year before.

No. 15 WiderFunnel Marketing Inc. had the largest one-year staff decrease on the list. Its employee base fell by 22.5% to 31 employees in 2020 from 40 in 2019.

Of the companies with at least two years of data available, eight experienced employee growth, four posted employee declines and three had no change over the past two years.

Graphically Speaking Services had the only five-year employee  decline in the top five. Its number of staff fell 32.1% to 38 in 2020 from 56 in 2016. That decrease would have been more acute had it not been for the 8.6% employee growth Graphically Speaking Services posted over the past year. The increase lifted the company from its low of 35 employees. •
