Western Canada’s largest annual technology conference has been cancelled against the backdrop the COVID-19 pandemic.

Organizers revealed Monday (March 16) the B.C. Tech Summit would not return for a fifth year in downtown Vancouver June 1-2.

The move comes after B.C. banned gatherings of more than 50 people.

“Over the coming months, we’ll explore how we can engage with the B.C. innovation community through alternative avenues,” Innovate BC communications director William Johnson said in a blog post.

“But nothing is more important than the health and safety of our team members, partners, attendees, vendors and community.”

Innovate BC is the provincial Crown agency responsible for organizing the conference, which drew about 3,000 delegates last year.

An Innovate BC representative told Business in Vancouver that the conference in its current form had been cancelled altogether rather than postponed.

Guests who purchased tickets to the summit are expected to be refunded by March 31.
