Challenge: The Victoria-based tech company is behind a video distribution platform for sports highlights that are showcased within online sports stories for publications like the Los Angeles Times or The Chicago Tribune. But with the COVID-19 pandemic putting major league sports on hiatus throughout North America, there are no longer live sports highlights to display.

Response: SendtoNews has launched custom “Reliving Sports” videos, featuring highlights from past glories such as the Toronto Raptors’ NBA Championship run or the top moments from the New York Yankees’ 2019 season. It’s also launched a dedicated video player for COVID-19 coverage. This comes on top of last year’s launch of videos that go beyond sports, offering publishers the option of displaying finance, health, news, lifestyle and weather videos to online readers.

“Summer’s the worst for us typically for video use in the northern hemisphere … But in this case we’ve seen very dramatic [increases]. Monday and Tuesday used to always be our biggest day because people would come in from the weekend, they’d catch up on their sports and catch up on their news, generally. And now we see there’s no difference,” said SendtoNews CEO Matthew Watson.

“We’ve seen a 50% increase over the last two weeks compared to February video use.”
