What happened: Celeste Haldane, chief commissioner of the BC Treaty Commission, has been re-appointed for a second three-year term.

Why it matters: The commission facilitates and oversees treaty negotiations between provincial and federal governments, and First Nations in B.C.

Celeste Haldane has been re-appointed to another three-year term at the helm of the BC Treaty Commission.

Haldane was first appointed chief commissioner in April 2017.

"Although these are challenging times, negotiations of treaties, agreements and other constructive arrangements must be a priority. Investing in reconciliation and Indigenous self-governance empowers healthy and prosperous regions throughout British Columbia," she said in a news release.

The BC Treaty Commission is an independent body that facilitates and oversees treaty negotiations between First Nations and provincial and federal governments.

According to the commission, 65 First Nations are participating or have participated in the BC Treaty negotiations process, including seven First Nations that have negotiated and implemented modern treaties.

Prior to her appointment as chief commissioner, Haldane served three two-year terms as a BC Treaty commissioner. She is also a practising lawyer, and was appointed Queen's Counsel last year.

Haldane was re-appointed to the position by the First Nations Summit, and provincial and federal governments.

BIV profiled Haldane in 2017, months after her initial appointment as chief commissioner. She also spoke about her life, work and leadership style on BIV's Women in Business podcast series in 2019.
