Raincoast Trading, one of the last remaining fish canneries in B.C., has received a sustainability stamp of approval from the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) for all of its products.

MSC certification is the world's most recognized label for certifying seafood as sustainably caught.

The Nanaimo-based cannery employs roughly 100 people. It sells canned sockeye, pink salmon and tuna. Most of the salmon comes from Alaska. The tuna comes from fishers in B.C. and the Maldives.

Some of the products the company sells were previously MSC cerified. Now all of its products are.

“We began using the MSC eco-label on some products several years ago, but feel it is important to broaden its application,” said Steve Hughes, president of Raincoast and Nanaimo, B.C.-based processor St. Jean’s Cannery & SmokehouseHughes.

“We want consumers to feel confident in knowing their food is coming from a local, independent, and audited eco-label. It allows them to be part of the solution.”
