On Aug. 11, 2021, the Government of Canada said that it is working to develop vaccine passports for international travel by the fall

The Government of Canada has announced it's working with the provinces to develop proof of vaccination documentation for international travel by the fall.

Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino said Wednesday (Aug. 11) that this step still will "support the re-opening of economies."

Federal officials continue to advise against non-essential travel outside of the country but they're looking to create a "more reliable and secure way" to show proof of COVID-19 vaccination, explains a press release.

The Government of Canada states it's "working with provinces and territories to develop a secure pan-Canadian approach" and that it will also continue "to engage with Indigenous partners across the country to ensure that a proof of vaccination credential responds to the needs and rights of Indigenous peoples."

How will Canadians submit proof of vaccination?

Canadians will continue to use the ArriveCAN app before they travel. They may submit proof of vaccination through the app when they return home with a focus "on digital proof of vaccination."

The Government of Canada ensures that all Canadians will have access to digital vaccine certification documents and encourages everyone to get vaccinated, regardless of travel plans.

"Vaccination with a complete series of approved COVID-19 vaccines provides individuals with substantial protection against the virus," states the release.

Canadians travelling outside of the country should check vaccination requirements at their destination, prior to travel. Other countries determine if or what type of proof of vaccination is required and the related benefits that may be provided such as reduced or no testing or quarantine requirements.

Canadians who do not have proof of vaccination can travel outside the country but they may have to quarantine or meet other requirements at their destination country. They will be subject to mandatory quarantine and testing upon return to Canada, too.

Canadians should always check the Government of Canada’s website for travel advice and advisories, as well as the entry and public health requirements of their destination country, before booking a trip.
