Premier John Horgan has confirmed that a growth detected in his throat is cancerous.

It was one week ago today that the premier issued a statement saying the growth had been found and that he would be having surgery and a biopsy the following day.

At that time, he appointed Public Safety Minister and Solicitor General Mike Farnworth as the province’s deputy premier.

Horgan said today the surgery was successful and the pathology confirmed the presence of cancer. He said he will undergo radiation treatments, which will continue until the end of the year.

"During that time, I will continue to participate virtually in briefings, cabinet meetings, and other important meetings like the Council of the Federation,” Horgan said in a statement.

“For in-person events, Minister Mike Farnworth and other cabinet ministers may attend in my place.”

Horgan said his prognosis is good and he expects to make a full recovery.
