German car-rental giant SIXT has opened its first Canadian location, at Library Square in Vancouver, and plans to expand to Toronto this fall.

All vehicles at the locations will be BMW and Mercedes-Benz. The company operates in more than 100 countries and has recently been rapidly expanding in the U.S. It would not say how big its Vancouver fleet will be, instead saying that the fleet size is "fluid," and will be sufficient to meet demand.

Vancouver is "an important leisure and commercial port city bringing both corporate and leisure travellers year-round," said SIXT North America president Thomas Kennedy.

"Expanding into Canada is a huge step for our business."

The company has hired eight Vancouver employees.

The public can book rentals at SIXT's office at Library Square but most business is expected to come through online bookings, where customers can select preferred vehicles. Online bookings launched at the end of June.
