A new $97 million city hall for the City of Surrey opened February 17 at noon.

The 180,000-square-foot building is located in Surrey's City Centre, an area that the city is targeting to develop high density commercial, residential and office space and includes Simon Fraser University's Surrey Campus, Central City Brewing and Coast Capital Savings' new head office.

"The new city hall is an iconic piece of architecture that has been purpose-built to serve the community," said City of Surrey Mayor, Dianne Watts.

"It is a city hall that residents can be proud of, and it represents a milestone in Surrey's transformation into the region's next great metropolitan centre."

The City of Surrey said that since the building of the new city hall was announced, there has been more than $3 billion in private sector investment in the area.

The new building includes meeting rooms, a performing arts venue, daycare and an urban park space.
