Canucks claim moving company stiffed team on sponsorship deal payment

The Vancouver Canucks Limited Partnership is suing Galaxy Mobile Storage Inc. for allegedly failing to pay for a sponsorship agreement where the company was allowed to bill itself as the “Official Mover of the Vancouver Canucks.”

The Vancouver Canucks Limited Partnership is suing Galaxy Mobile Storage Inc. for allegedly failing to pay for a sponsorship agreement where the company was allowed to bill itself as the “Official Mover of the Vancouver Canucks.”

The hockey franchise filed a notice of civil claim in BC Supreme Court on July 16. In its claim, the team claims it inked a sponsorship deal with Galaxy in January 2013 for the 2013-2014 NHL season. The $90,000 deal included provisions for advertising during games, moving referrals for team personnel, and a right of first negation for the subsequent hockey season. Galaxy was also allowed to use the Canucks’ “preferred sponsor logo” and was given $87,000 worth of moving referrals over the course of the agreement.

But Galaxy allegedly refused to pay for the sponsorship rights and because the Canucks sell “advertising and sponsorship benefits on a season-by-season basis and on an industry-by-industry basis … it is not practically possible for VCLP to sell sponsorship and advertising benefits on a piecemeal basis and, in particular, it is not practically possible for VCLP to sell the balance of any benefits associated with a partly completed NHL season to a new purchaser,” the claim states.

The Vancouver Canucks Limited Partnership seeks damages for breach of contract and unjust enrichment. The allegations have not been tested in court and Galaxy Mobile Storage had not filed a response by press time.
