Running late on filing your income tax return for 2014? Fear not: you now have an extra five days to get this done.

On April 24, the Canada Revenue Agency mistakenly sent out a notice to some Canadians that said the deadline for all returns submitted electronically is May 5. In fact, the notice was meant to apply to returns that are returned for correction only, not all returns.

Due to the confusion, the CRA has now changed the deadline to May 5 for all returns.

On April 28, the CRA issued a notice that said, “The CRA takes full responsibility for the error and our first priority is to ensure that no Canadian is negatively affected. As a result, and at Minister Findlay's request, 2014 tax returns filed by midnight on May 5, 2015, will not incur interest or penalties.”

The CRA has issued an apology for this confusion.
