Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson is urging local businesses to sign on to a city-sponsored pledge to reduce carbon emissions.

A new round of climate talks between governments will take place this December in Paris, and Vancouver businesses are being encouraged to take the pledge to show that they support stronger government action on reducing emissions.

The pledge is strongly linked to the City of Vancouver’s Greenest City action plan, and participating businesses also have an “option” to support the city’s goal to power the city exclusively by renewable sources of energy by 2050. They can also choose to disclose their current efforts or future goals to reduce their carbon emissions.

So far, 10 businesses have signed up, including Telus, Vancity, Mountain Equipment Co-op and Hootsuite.

Robertson announced the pledge while attending Climate Week NYC in New York this weekend.
