Nordstrom opened in downtown Vancouver to much fanfare September 18 and although it is seen as a luxury retailer, it is not that much more expensive than the Bay, a new study has found.
The new arrival is more expensive than the iconic Canadian retail chain, but the price difference is less than 1%, according to a report released by Pricefox Inc, a Vancouver-based tech startup that compares pricing and products in users’ local areas.
"The majority of the prices that we surveyed were identical between the two stores,” said Pricefox managing director Olga Orda.
“Being a new arrival in the Vancouver downtown area, it is a reasonable assumption that Nordstrom is aligning its regular in-store prices to its nearest competitor."
The study looked at top selling products and brands and frequently purchased items in men’s and women’s clothing, accessories and health and beauty products. Some of the brands compared were Dior, Estee Lauder, Ray-Ban, Kate Spade and Marc Jacobs.
There were some price differences that stood out, however. The study found a specific pair of J Brand jeans was 14% higher at Nordstrom, and the price of a certain Hugo Boss watch was 5% higher at the Bay.
