JS (Jean-Sebastien) Dupuis has been appointed beverage director at Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar. Dupuis, originally from Quebec, spent more than a decade in Whistler and worked as bar manager at Garfinkel’s and beverage director at Bearfoot Bistro. In 2011, Dupuis relocated to Vancouver and worked at Tableau Bar Bistro and Homer St. Café and Bar before joining Charton-Hobbs Inc. in a sales and promotions role in 2014.

Anthony Dearden, Andrew Ming-Lum and Marcus Ostrowerka have joined Gowling WLG’s Vancouver office. Dearden is a European and chartered U.K. patent attorney who focuses primarily on drafting and prosecuting patent applications relating to a wide range of subject matter. Ming-Lum is an associate in the firm’s intellectual property and life sciences groups, assisting clients in patent drafting and prosecution, with a focus on inventions in the biotechnology, immunology, molecular biology and biochemistry fields. Ostrowerka is an associate practising in the employment and labour law group, defending employers in wrongful dismissal actions and providing advice on occupational health and safety, privacy, human rights, employment standards and workers’ compensation matters.

Doug French has been appointed executive vice-president and chief financial officer at Telus, replacing John Gossling. French has 30 years of financial management experience and 20 years of career progression within Telus, including key roles as controller for the company’s largest business units in the business and consumer divisions, and more recently serving as corporate controller.

Michael Horowitz, founder and principal of MHI Finance Corp., a private Toronto-based merchant banking firm specializing in venture debt funding, has joined Urban Communications Inc.’s board of directors. Horowitz has more than two decades of experience providing strategic and capital markets advice to senior executive management teams across North America.

Hats Off

The Connor, Clark & Lunn Foundation donated $6,000 to Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland. This is the third year for this donation and is part of a three-year commitment to support the agency’s mentoring program, which matches girls aged seven to 17 with a supportive female mentor.

Premium Brands Holdings Corp. donated $30,000 to the Canadian Red Cross to help those affected by the wildfires in northern Alberta. In addition, Premium Brands is making available another $20,000 to match donations made by its employees to the Canadian Red Cross. Premium Brands will also be working with its portfolio companies, including Centennial Foodservice, Grimm’s, Harvest Meats, Piller’s, Hygaard, Quality Fast Foods and Freybe, to donate food supplies towards the relief and to future rebuilding efforts.

The 18th annual Courage to Come Back Awards raised more than $1.43 million, including a $100,000 donation from the Province of B.C. The funds will go directly to Coast Mental Health to support those dealing with mental illness. During the evening at the Vancouver Convention Centre, six individuals who have overcome illness or adversity and have “come back to give back” to their communities received glass sculptures designed by Susan Point: Tom Teranishi, Vancouver, medical category; Meredith Graham, New Westminster, social adversity category; Jemal Damtawe, Coquitlam, addiction category; Christy Campbell, North Vancouver, physical rehabilitation category; Barbara Harris, Vancouver, mental health category; and Coltyn Liu, Vancouver, youth category.

The Sapperton Day Street Festival, a non-profit community event organized by the Sapperton Business Association and local community partners and sponsors, raised and donated $13,000 last year to the Royal Columbian Hospital Foundation. This year’s event takes place on Sunday, June 12, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and includes bouncy castles, clowns, jugglers, games, live performances, mini-donuts, a pancake breakfast, rock climbing wall, vendors and more.

Westminster Savings Credit Union donated $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross, in support of those impacted by the Fort McMurray wildfires. The credit union will also match all donations made by its employees up to an additional $5,000.

Scotiabank employees across the B.C. and Yukon region donated $9,004.20 to the Heart and Stroke Foundation. The funds were raised during Heart Month (February).

Concentra’s Empowering Your Communities campaign donated $10,000 to the Full Cupboard, Envision Financial’s community program. Established in 2013, the Full Cupboard aims to raise food, funds and awareness for food banks in the Lower Mainland and Kitimat.

UPS donated US$2,900 to Decoda Literacy Solutions. The funds will be used to expand Decoda’s library collection to provide useful literacy resources to all British Columbians.

North Vancouver-based Q Energy, a natural energy and hydration drink company established in 2011, is sending $5,000 worth of product – 2,700 bottles – to the firefighters working on the fires in Fort McMurray, Alberta. 

Leith Wheeler Investment Counsel, an independent, employee-owned investment firm, donated a total of $20,000 to two charities involved in the Fort McMurray forest fire relief effort: $10,000 to the Canadian Red Cross and another $10,000 to STARS (Shock Trauma Air Rescue Service), the air ambulance service with six bases across the Prairies.

Ted Leung of the Co-operators (Coquitlam); Ricky Chhibber, president and owner, Medallion Homes (Vancouver); Suka Lang, registered acupuncturist, Acupoint Wellness Centre (Vancouver); and Daniel Leung, Citizen Time & Gold (Victoria) donated $2,800 to Douglas College, in support of single parents enrolled at the college. •
