The aftermath of the Fort McMurray wildfire continues to dampen Canada’s overall crude oil production.
Canada produced 14.7 million cubic metres (92.8 million barrels) of crude oil and equivalent products in May, an 11.6% drop compared to the same month in 2015.
Statistics Canada figures point to continuing maintenance at oilsands facilities as the main factor contributing to the decline in production. Two major oilsands facilities in Fort McMurray were directly effected by the wildfire. In May, synthetic crude oil production was at its lowest level since 2005.
Alberta accounted for 74.4% of Canada’s total production of crude oil and equivalent products in May, according to Statistics Canada. Production in Alberta totalled 11.0 million cubic metres this May, down 16.3% from the same month in 2015, its lowest level since September 2011.
