Sharmen Vigouret Lee has been appointed dean at the British Columbia Institute of Technology’s School of Health Sciences, effective March 13. Vigouret Lee has more than 25 years of experience in the public health-care sector, as well as 17 years of experience educating and mentoring post-secondary students. For the past five years, she has spearheaded a clinical governance and accountability framework for the Fraser Health Authority. She has also held executive positions with the Diagnostic Accreditation Program of British Columbia and the BC Cancer Agency.

Greg Moore, mayor of Port Coquitlam, has been appointed chair of Hawthorne Seniors Care Community’s capital campaign, Growing Our Care. Joining Moore on the campaign cabinet are Shelley Arding, Chris Barbati, Cyrille Barnabe, Mike Farnworth, Donna Gray, Deborah Hyslop, Philip Jewell, Brian Madaski, Walter Van Drimmelen (Hawthorne’s board chair) and John Wolff. The campaign aims to raise $1 million to complete the funding required towards the $4.2 million renovation of Hawthorne Lodge, a long-term care facility for seniors with chronic illness and who require 24-7 care. Plans are underway to kickoff the campaign to the public at the end of March 2017.

Howie Outerbridge has joined LoganHR as vice-president of client solutions. Outerbridge has more than 15 years of experience in human capital and higher education, including roles at LHH Knightsbridge, University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University.

Lisa Hiebert, previously an associate at Borden Ladner Gervais LLP, has been made a partner at the firm, while Meghan Murtha and Michelle F. Yung have joined the firm as associates. Hiebert’s practice area is in bankruptcy, insolvency and restructuring; Murtha’s practice is in commercial real estate; and Yung practises in commercial real estate, commercial real estate leasing, landing development and real estate leasing.

Jon Cartwright and Manny Padda have joined The Next Big Thing as entrepreneur in residence and investor in residence, respectively. Cartwright is an active member of the Vancouver startup community, specializing in the areas of market testing and product development; he is the founder and now chairman of Foodee, adviser at Finn.ai and head of growth at Zolo Realty. Padda is founder of New Avenue Capital, co-founder of GradusOne and investor in Picatic, MyBestHelper, ShareShed and MTT. Padda also sits on a number of advisory boards in the education and not-for-profit sectors with a dedicated focus on providing education and mentorship to today’s youth.

BioteQ Environmental Technologies Inc. has changed its corporate name to BQE Water Inc. effective March 1. The new name reflects the company’s focus on clean water as its product and resource. Biological treatment, which gave rise to BioteQ’s name 17 years ago, remains an important component of the company’s business; however, the company’s expertise has expanded to include many non-biological systems dealing with a broad range of constituents present in waste water produced by the mining and metallurgical industry. Hats Off
Staff, management and customers at White Spot – Richmond Centre donated $12,288 to support Richmond Hospital Foundation. The funds were raised at the restaurant’s annual Christmas luncheon; restaurant staff donated their time and tips on Christmas Day and all net proceeds from the event were donated. White Spot – Richmond Centre has donated more than $126,000 since 2001 to help improve care for patients in Richmond.
United Way Lower Mainland donated a $12,500 School’s Out grant to the Big Sisters of BC Lower Mainland’s Study Buddy program. These funds will help the organization match at-risk girls with a supportive mentor to focus on school work. Little Sisters in this program not only improve their academics but also report a higher level of self-esteem.
Meridian Arms Pub in Port Coquitlam donated $10,000 to Crossroads Hospice Society. Funds were raised through the pub’s third annual football pool and 50/50 draws throughout the year.
Attendees at the Vancouver General HospitalandUniversity of British Columbia Hospital Foundation’s Time to Shine Gala, which took place in early February at the Fairmont Pacific Rim, donated more than $2.88 million to the foundation. Sponsored by Richmond-based Viva Pharmaceuticals, the funds raised will go toward the Future of Surgery campaign.
Chevron Canada provided $10,000 in support funding to Science World BC’s Scientists and Innovators in the Schools, a program in which Science World trains people in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) careers to deliver hands-on STEM presentations in classrooms B.C.-wide. •
