Singapore and Malaysia are taking a small step in the eventual integration of Southeast Asia’s economies with the building of a cross-border rapid transit system.

About 300,000 pedestrians and 60,000 vehicles cross the border in both directions each day, mostly Malaysians who have jobs in Singapore. The new line is only four kilometres long and will link Bukit Chagar terminus in Malaysia’s Johor state with Woodlands North station on Singapore’s rapid transit system.

The line will carry up to 10,000 passengers per hour on trains leaving every four minutes. There will be joint customs and immigration so only one inspection is needed on each trip.
