Coming this March, rich fabrics and intricate designs will dominate the runway at the first South Asian Fashion Week.

From March 2 to 4 at the Hard Rock Casino in Coquitlam, the three-day event will kick off with an evening gala and private fashion viewing. On the Saturday and Sunday, guests can enjoy creations on the runway, meet the designers and browse the SAFW show room.

“Cultural appropriation is a hot button issue, especially in fashion. At SAFW, we want to give everyone the permission to freely explore wearing traditional South Asian apparel,” said co-founder Cindy Khella in a press release. “We invite everyone to celebrate the artistry of South Asian fashion and design on the runway, and in the streets.”

SAFW celebrates South Asian fashion designers and is produced by Cindy Khella, Farah Hasan, Hartej Dhanda, and Pindie Dhaliwal. The event aims to create a platform that inspires and defines upcoming South Asian fashion trends in contemporary womenswear, menswear and accessories.

“We want to challenge and expand people’s imagination to go beyond Bollywood when it comes to South Asian fashion,” said co-founder Farah Hasan in a press release. “South Asia is highly diverse, and includes Pakistan, Afghanistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, not just India.”

This year, the show will focus on Indian and Pakastani fashions. For more details or to purchase tickets, visit www.safw.ca.
