The province’s largest engineering firms are growing, which is a welcome change from five years ago.
The top 20 companies on Business in Vancouver’s Biggest Engineering Firms in B.C. list increased the number of professional engineers they employ by an average of 12% in 2018 from 2017.
This increase in professional engineers contrasts with what the industry was experiencing five years ago. In 2014, the number of professional engineers working at the province’s largest engineering firms fell an average of 3.3% from 2013.
The top five largest engineering firms in the province did not grow at a significantly faster rate than the firms lower on the list. The average growth of the five largest engineering firms in the province was 12.8% in 2018 from 2017.
Stantec had the largest one-year increase in professional engineers on BIV’s list. The number of engineers working at Stantec grew 63.7%, increasing to 185 in 2018 from 113 in 2017.
Tetra Tech Inc. had the largest one-year decline in engineers, falling to ninth place in 2018 from fourth in 2017. When the provincial industry was experiencing a decline in engineers in 2014, Tetra Tech held the second-place spot.
The company decreased its number of professional engineers by 39.9% to 98 in 2018 from 163 in 2017. •
