B.C. has recorded 11 new cases of COVID-19 compared with a day earlier, provincial health officer Bonnie Henry said Saturday (May 30).

The latest figures bring the total number of positive coronavirus cases to 2,573.

Henry also revealed no new deaths were recorded since the last provincial update on Friday.

The province reported no new deaths May 26 and May 29.

Henry said the low numbers are encouraging coming at the end of the second week of the province’s economic restart.

B.C.’s top doctor also announced the province was officially banning overnight summer camp to mitigate potential outbreaks.

“I know it’s a disappointment for many groups who are used to having that very important part of their summer,” Henry said during a briefing.

She said physical distancing is particularly challenging for overnight camps and concerns remain over the number of young people who may arrive from outside B.C.

The decision comes as classes begin to reopen across the province for the final few weeks of school.

Henry said she understands trepidations some parents might feel about their children returning to schools but insisted the government would not have embarked on those plans if it didn’t think it was safe.

But Henry added she would not be surprised if “one or two” cases emerge in schools in the coming weeks.

So far, 77 young people under the age of 19 have tested positive for COVID-19.

Meanwhile, the province reported no new healthcare or community outbreaks of the coronavirus.

Two separate care-home outbreaks at Evergreen House and Haro Park Centre Society were declared over.

Haro Park was one of the facilities hardest hit by COVID-19.

Henry offered her condolence and support to the residents and families of those are the facility.

There are currently 228 active cases of COVID-19 in the province, with 35 people hospitalized.

To date, 2,181 B.C. residents have fully recovered from the coronavirus.

The total COVID-19 cases can be broken down as follows:

•  902 in Vancouver Coastal Health
•  1,285 in Fraser Health
•  127 in Island Health
•  195 in Interior Health
•   64 in Northern Health
