The Richmond Night Market will not open for the May long weekend, as has been tradition, but organizers still hope to salvage some of the summer events with an opening in July or August.

The market, located on vacant lots next to the River Rock Casino, is one of the biggest of its kind in North American. Normally, it attracts thousands of people from early May to October. However, the annual event had to be cancelled last year because of the pandemic.

The Richmond News previously reported that Night Market organizer, Raymond Cheung, had applied to the city for a permit starting May 21 and running until the end of the year, depending on public health orders.

“(However,) with the continued evolving COVID-19 pandemic situation, Richmond Night Market has to make this difficult decision to postpone our opening date for (the) 2021 event, to ensure the health and safety of our guests, staff and vendors,” reads the statement.

Regardless, organizers hope the market will open in early July or August, based on vaccination progress and approval by the Public Health Orders, the statement continues.
