Mark Falkenberg, deputy managing editor:

NASA’s brand-new James Webb Space Telescope is now tucked into its “halo” orbit around the sun, 1.5 million km from Earth. The scope’s 6.5 metre mirror is designed to peer farther into the universe, and further back in time, than even the Hubble space telescope. The Webb will take a few months to fine-tune before going into operation in the summer. – Reuters

Emma Crawford, online editor:

For the first time since it was created, Facebook has seen its number of daily active users drop. The share price for Meta Networks, Facebook’s parent company, plunged 20% in after-hours trading February 3, which represents a US$200b drop for the company. The company cited competition from TikTok and YouTube as a main reason for the decline. – BBC
