The BC Chamber of Commerce is joining the chorus of voices calling for an end to job action by the BC General Employees Union.
The Chamber said it is backing an open letter that was addressed to Premier John Horgan and the BCGEU earlier this week and claims the job action is “yet another crushing blow” to the hospitality and tourism sector, which is just beginning to recover from the negative impact of COVID-19 pandemic restrictions.
“We understand the BCGEU is trying to put the best interests of its own members first, however, their labour action is putting thousands of private sector workers within the industries referenced above at risk. Our members are already reporting closures and reductions in hours due to the shortage of product and many more are precariously close to the same result,” said Fiona Famulak, president and CEO of the BC Chamber of Commerce in a statement.
Famulak points out that it’s only been three and a half years since the legalization of cannabis and job action could drive consumers back to the illegal and unregulated market.
“We are pleased the parties have agreed to return to the bargaining table and encourage them to stay at the table until an agreement is reached. As a demonstration of good faith, we also encourage the removal of picket lines while negotiations are underway,” she adds.
At a minimum, the BC Chamber of Commerce wants a de-escalation of job action at the liquor and cannabis distribution centres to allow businesses that depend on supply from the facilities to maintain their operations.
