The Swiss Chalet Rotisserie & Grill at 3860 Lougheed Hwy in Burnaby will be permanently closing its doors on Sunday, Aug. 21. It was the last standing restaurant in the Swiss Chalet chain in all of B.C. The location was previously up for closure in December 2021 but survived a last-minute reprieve.

The restaurant’s general manager told the NOW the closure is due to economic reasons.

Recipe Unlimited operates and franchises restaurant brands including Swiss Chalet, Bier Markt, Harvey's, The Keg, New York Fries and more. The company sold its Milestones restaurant brand in 2021.

In its 2022 second-quarter results, Recipe Unlimited said the food services industry continues to experience disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic. The statement specifically pointed to supply chains and staffing levels, plus the Ukraine-Russia conflict. The two countries are key global supplies of wheat, corn and vegetable oil.

"Multiple economic sectors have all opened at once which has created a significant labour shortage in North America," says the Aug. 2 memo.

Recipe Unlimited notes labour shortages are also negatively impacting commodity food prices and other input and support costs.
