Local food systems are a “critical economic driver,” said B.C.’s agriculture minister, Lana Popham, outside Richmond’s Fine Choice Foods’ new manufacturing facility.

The provincial minister was joined by CEO of Fine Choice Foods Jason Longden, Richmond Mayor Malcolm Brodie and several city councillors to announce the opening of Fine Choice Food’s second facility in Richmond.

“By using 3.5 million lbs of locally grown vegetables each year, along with a number of other regionally sourced products, the company’s support for this community and its farmers benefits everyone as they continue to expand their presence in both Canada and the United States,” said Popham.

Fine Choice Foods is an Asian-inspired foods business, and its new facility, at #1105-2551 No. 6 Rd., will produce spring rolls to the length of more than 700 football fields on a weekly basis.

More than 70 new jobs were created with the company’s expansion in its new 50,000-square-foot facility, explained Longden.

“We’re extremely proud of our growth over the past several decades and more importantly, proud to be able to honor the legacy of the Lui family and the SUMM! brand they created more than 30 years ago,” he said.

The company was founded in Vancouver by the Lui family in 1986 and specializes in spring rolls, gyoza dumplings and the original apple pie roll under the SUMM! Brand.
