Melanie Mark, the first First Nations woman to serve as a member in B.C.'s legislative assembly, and the first and only First Nations woman to have served in the province's cabinet, will speak at BIV's Influential Women in Business Awards event on March 8.

Last week, Mark announced her resignation from provincial politics, describing her experience in government as feeling "like a torture chamber."

"I've put up with enough abuse in my life," she said in a speech. "I'm educated, I've worked hard for my career my whole life, I have all the credentials, I deserve to be here."

Mark was elected as MLA for Vancouver-Mount Pleasant in 2016. She has served as minister of advanced education, skills and training, and as minister of tourism, arts, culture and sport. She is Nisga'a, Gitxsan, Cree and Ojibway.

On International Women's Day, Mark will join BIV editor-in-chief Hayley Woodin for an onstage conversation about leadership, politics and supporting the success of women and Indigenous women.

Five female leaders will be presented with 2023 Influential Women in Business Awards at the event, which will be held at the Fairmont Waterfront in Vancouver.

Event registration closes Sunday. Additional information is available at biv.com/iwib.
