Bangladesh: Power plant survives court challenge

Bangladesh's High Court has cleared the way for construction of a controversial coal-fired power plant in Bagerhat, which critics say will endanger the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest.

Bangladesh's High Court has cleared the way for construction of a controversial coal-fired power plant in Bagerhat, which critics say will endanger the Sundarbans, the world's largest mangrove forest.

The court rejected a petition asking for the government to be directed to stop construction of the Rampal Power Plant until a full environmental assessment is undertaken.

This came the day after Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and her Indian counterpart Manmohan Sing jointly unveiled a foundation plaque at the construction site.
