A Canadian citizen who had been in Japan receiving treatment after contracting COVID-19 has died, officials confirmed Friday morning.
The news was tweeted by federal Foreign Affairs Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne this morning, although few other details have been released.
The victim was a passenger on the Diamond Princess cruise ship that was quarantined for four weeks in the Port of Yokohama in February. The ship was one of the main sources of COVID-19 cases in Japan, with more than 700 of its 3,711 passengers at that time contracting the coronavirus.
There have now been 8 deaths among Diamond Princess passengers; previous deaths involved Japanese, British, Australian and Hong Kong nationals who fell ill during the cruise.
