China: Australia pursuing free trade agreement

Australia's new prime minister, Tony Abbott, says one of his government's main aims is to conclude a free trade agreement with China within a year.

Australia's new prime minister, Tony Abbott, says one of his government's main aims is to conclude a free trade agreement with China within a year.

Speaking after his meeting with Chinese president Xi Jinping at the Asia-Pacific Economic Co-operation Forum in Indonesia, Abbott said he would be disappointed if an agreement was not reached within a year.

"I want an agreement to be as comprehensive as possible," Abbott said. "But [I think] you should take what you can get today and pitch for the rest tomorrow when you've got a strong foundation to build on."
