U.S. companies operating in China are reporting an increasingly "challenging" business environment stemming from rising costs, government restrictions and threats to intellectual property.

A survey of 220 companies by Washington-based non-profit United States China Business Council found that 90% of members said their China businesses are profitable, the highest level recorded so far.

But despite this, only half of those surveyed said they plan to invest more in China next year, down from 67% in 2012.
