Singapore is well known as the Asian nirvana for would-be expatriate workers, especially in banking, finance, information technology and the communications sectors. But there's a backlash in the Lion City among locals who think they're being kept out of jobs in favour of the foreigners.

The government has responded and introduced regulations that all companies with more than 25 employees must advertise on government-run job sites all professional, managerial and executive posts paying more than $10,000 a month for two weeks before they will be allowed to offer a foreigner the job.

Several foreigners who have tried to switch jobs within Singapore have already had their Employment Pass applications rejected.
