  • Incumbent: Bowinn Ma (NDP | 2017)
  • Candidates:
    • NDP: Bowinn Ma
    • Conservative: David Splett
  • 2020 Results:
    • NDP – 60%
    • Liberal – 27%
    • Green – 13%
  • Description:
    • A BC Liberal seat for 21 years straight, the NDP finally managed to flip this one with star candidate Bowinn Ma, professional engineer and project manager. In 2020, her campaign operations combined with the pandemic boost for the governing New Democrats propelled her to almost 60% of the vote, a previously unfathomable result for the party.
    • Now, Ma is looking to continue that hot streak. The NDP does best here around Central and Lower Lonsdale, home to a strong Persian community among which they’ve made inroads in the past decade. Homulchesan, the largest of many Squamish villages dotted across Metro Vancouver, is staunchly NDP as well. Meanwhile, the BC Liberals fared well along the waterfront around the Lonsdale Quay, along with the northeast corner of the riding east of Ridgeway but south and west of the winding Trans-Canada Highway.
    • Ma’s strong personal vote and campaign team make this seat a safer bet for a New Democrat than it otherwise would be for any other candidate. Conservative David Splett, an accountant, will face an uphill battle in flipping this riding back to the free enterprise coalition.
