- Description:
- Covering northwest Richmond, this riding has been represented by the BC Liberals’ Teresa Wat since 2013. Formerly Glen Clark’s press secretary in the 1990s, Wat became well-known in Richmond’s Chinese community through her work in media.
- The NDP, previously banking on the odds of a votesplit between Wat under United and a Conservative candidate, nominated local community activist Linda Li. As for the Greens, they’ve nominated President of the Sea Island Community Association Tamás Revóczi.
- On Sea Island, the Greens scored a robust 25% of the vote in 2020. Thompson, on the western edge of the riding, is a BC Liberal stronghold, and Wat should be able that appeal over. The polls around the Terra Nova community there gave Wat a staggering 70% of the vote in 2017 and 2020! The right’s strength extends eastwards into the Golden Village commercial district, only blunted by territory taken in from Richmond-Queensborough east of Highway 99. Public safety and drug use is a hot topic in the community, especially since the Cambie and Sexsmith consumption site was supposed to be placed here.
- In a riding like this, the vote for the BC Liberals is a combination of wealth, small business, and antipathy towards the NDP. Combined with Wat’s personal vote, the Conservatives should have a good shot at taking the riding.
